Falls from Height are a Leading Cause of Construction Fatalities
Posted on October 19, 2011 by Ronald Todd
After a record high in 2007 for fatal falls from height (847 construction fatalities), 2008 had a 20% decrease.
The decreases by type of fatal fall include:
- 23% decrease of fatal falls to a lower level (these fatal falls account for 85% of all fatal falls)
- 26% decrease of fatal falls from roofs; and
- 14% decrease of ladder accidents.
(See Bureau of Labor Statistics). Fatal falls to a floor, walkway or against an object had a slight increase in 2008 over 2007.
The first step to prevent construction site hazards from falls is for contractors and employers to have a plan to identify and protect their workers from these fatal falls. If OSHA regulations are followed, fatal falls can be eliminated. Today, falls are a leading cause of wrongful deaths at a construction site. (See U.S. Department of Labor).
