Excavation Cave-Ins are a Serious Problem at Construction Sites in Indiana

Posted on October 19, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Excavation cave-ins cause serious injuries that often result in construction fatalities.

These cave-ins happen when:

  • Trenches are not properly shored,
  • A competent person does not monitor the changing conditions of the trench, and
  • Large trucks or equipment are too close to the trench.

To eliminate the construction site hazards of excavation cave-ins, contractors need to follow the OSHA standards under 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P -- Excavations, 29 CFR 1926 Subpart S -- Underground construction, caissons, cofferdams, and compressed air, and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart V -- Power transmission and distribution.

When trenches cave-in, workers in the trench are asphyxiated by the weight of the falling dirt. Unfortunately, wrongful death is too common in excavation cave-ins.
