Owner of Crane Company Criminally Charged for Ignoring Construction Site Hazards
The owner of the New York Crane Equipment Corporation was indicted on manslaughter charges in connection to a construction accident in 2008. Two construction workers were killed when a crane falls from height. The crane became a construction site hazard after it had been struck by lightning. The owner of the crane obtained bids to fix the crane. An Ohio company agreed to fix the crane for $120,127. A Shanghai based company proposed to do the job for only $20,000. The prosecutor alleged that the construction fatalities would have been prevented if the crane had been properly repaired.
This is not the only construction fatalities resulting from a crane owned by the New York Crane Equipment Corporation. Two months after the fatal collapse resulting in the indictment, another crane failed causing the wrongful death of seven people.
