Common Construction Hazards Cause the Majority of Construction Fatalities
Posted on October 19, 2011 by Ronald Todd
In the United States, there are around 1,000 construction fatalities a year. (See U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics). Many more construction accidents lead to severe injuries such as severe traumatic brain injury, complete spinal cord injury, herniated disc injury, paralysis injury, paraplegic injury, and quadriplegic injury.
These construction accidents result from many causes. The most common causes for construction site accidents are:
- Falls from height, falls from roof or falls from ladders are the most common construction site accidents and are responsible for most construction fatalities. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, one-third of all construction fatalities are from falls from height.
- Trench accidents are a very dangerous construction site hazard because of the sheer weight of the soil. Trench injuries are caused by being struck by objects, by being injured by the trenching equipment, by being caught in a cave-in, by contacting overhead power lines or other electric current, and by falling from a ladder.
- Electrocution accidents at a construction site are caused most commonly by defective wiring or by not having proper tagout/lockout procedures.
All of these construction accidents can be prevented if OSHA standards are followed by general contractors, sub-contractors and other employers at the construction site.
