Defective Hoists cause Construction Fatalities in Indiana

Posted on October 13, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Hoists are used at construction sites to lift building materials and workers to heights. Hoist accidents are responsible for the most serious injuries at a jobsite. The failure of any part of the hoist can result in serious injuries and even wrongful death. OSHA regulations require workers to be protected from falls from height of 6 feet or more by guardrail systems or personal arrest systems. Even if a guardrail system is used, personal fall arrest system must also be used for those worker that are working outside the guardrail to facilitate the hoisting operations. Any personal arrest system must not be attached to either the guardrail or hoist. (29 CFR 1926.500, 501, 502 and 503).

Falls from height, which include falls from a hoist, are the single greatest cause of construction fatalities and a major cause of injuries such as severe traumatic brain injury or a paralysis injury. With proper precautions, the construction site hazards from hoists can be eliminated or reduced.
