A Ladder Injury is a Risk When Working at a Construction Site

Posted on October 13, 2011 by Ronald Todd

Ladders can be construction site hazards if not properly used. The risks for severe and permanent injuries are great with ladders. Injuries can occur from falls from height off the ladder. Ladder injuries are a major cause of construction fatalities as well as paralysis injuries and severe traumatic brain injuries.

There are ways to lessen your risk from being injured while working with a ladder. You should do the following:

  1. Extend the ladder at least 3 feet above the roof
  2. Secure the top of the ladder
  3. Don't overload the ladder
  4. Inspect the ladder for defects prior to use
  5. Review OSHA standards for ladders under 29 CFR 1926.1053 (a)(1)

When you take these precautions, you will be less likely to be injured from a ladder. No one wants to risk being permanently and severely injured with a severe traumatic brain injury or a spinal injury paralysis.
