When you fail a chemical test (breath, blood, or urine) for operating while intoxicated (OWI) you will have your license suspended for a minimum of 180. Your license will be suspended for one year for failure to submit to a chemical test. Your license suspension does not begin until you have been notified by the court or the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Also, you can request a hardship license if your case is pending, to allow you to go to and from work. At the conclusion of your case, if you are found guilty and this is your first offense, you may request the following:
(1) 90 day license suspension with high-risk insurance
(2) 30 day license suspension followed by 180 days of probationary driving for work, school, or other proper purposes.
If you elect to receive a probationary license, you may be required to equip your vehicle (at your own expense) with an ignition interlock (which will prevent you from operating the vehicle if you have any alcohol in your system.

The length of time you may have a suspended license depends on a number of factors, including the number of previous alcohol offenses, your driving record (i.e., the number of moving violations), whether an accident was involved, and your blood alcohol content (BAC). For example, you can have your driver's license suspended for life for driving while your license is already suspended as a habitual offender.
